Alexandra Rose Rieger Celebrity Supporter for Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation*

On a sunny, cloudless afternoon in Brentwood, California, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation hosted the A Time for Heroes Celebrity Carnival, presented by Disney. The June 8 carnival was a huge success, providing a day of family fun and raising nearly $1 million to help support the Foundation’s lifesaving programs for children and families. The carnival has been a tradition in Los Angeles since Elizabeth Glaser and her two friends, Susie Zeegen and Susan DeLaurentis, started the Foundation nearly 20 years ago.
Ticket-holders knew they were in for a treat before they even arrived: A massive Ferris wheel emblazoned with the Foundation’s logo was visible for miles. But that was just the beginning. The carnival offered a dizzying array of activities – games, crafts, food, musical performances, and dozens of celebrity “heroes” who attended the carnival to help fight pediatric AIDS and have some fun of their own.
“The Elizabeth Glaser Foundation is just so special because they have improved the lives of millions of children who have been sent on this medical journey,” said actor Henry Winkler.
The Disney activities were clustered under a grove of shady trees, where actors Robin Williams and Blair Underwood dueled against young warriors with foam-rubber swords in Disney’s Voyage to Narnia, and actor Seth Green and Survivor host Jeff Probst read to children at Wonderland of Stories. Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Marcia Cross hung out at Pixie Hollow, where children (and a few adults) designed their own fairy wings and wands, while teen actress, musician and youth ambassador Alexandra Rose Rieger was a celebrity reader in the fairytale inspired, Wonderland of Stories arena.
Guests with green thumbs had several activities to choose from: decorating bamboo pots at the “Grow Green, Grow Strong With Biolage” booth, staffed by several celebrity heroes, or making T-shirts and planting trees at Alternative’s Green Forest with actress Denise Richards and photographer Nigel Barker. Toddlers had a ball at the Sprouts Preschool Playzone, where they could pal around with Barney, design a card for a child in Africa, or practice yoga.
sports-minded kids raced Hot Wheels and putted golf balls at the Mattel Playground with Nicole Richie, musician Joel Madden, and Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan, among others. The athletically inclined could also shoot hoops with L.A. Clippers star Cuttino Mobley or play in the learning area with Kelly Hu and Lance Bass.Throughout the day, DJ Nate and his team from Radio Disney entertained the crowd on the main stage. Carnival attendees also had the chance to meet several children and young adults living with HIV, who spoke on stage about their experiences. “I consider myself lucky to be alive,” said 17-year-old Alee Meredith, who was born with HIV. “One thing I’ve learned from my parents is that we can all get involved and make a difference. Elizabeth Glaser is proof of that. Everyone here is proof of that.”

Alexandra Rose Rieger, Nicole Richie and

Joel Madden at the the Elizabeth Glaser

Pediatric AIDS Foundation hosted the A

Time for Heroes Celebrity Carnival.

“Today’s infected children have so much more hope because of the efforts of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation,” said Marty, who was attending the carnival for the first time without her son. “I know that if we keep working together in the spirit of Brett and Elizabeth and so many others, we will see a day when every child has the chance to grow up as a healthy, happy adult.”
Jake Glaser, Elizabeth Glaser’s son, was the final speaker of the day. Jake encouraged each person in attendance to perform one act of kindness each day. “Everything you see today started with one person. One act of kindness,” Jake told the crowd. “Now I look out at you and see hundreds, which could turn into thousands…We can change the world.”
The 19th A Time for Heroes then entered the history books, leaving fans wondering what the 20th year will bring.

brute force evo 2 software facts captcha solve ease part 9

THIS IS JUST THE STORYOnce Upon a TimeOnce Upon A Time, There was a place called NETWORLD a.k.a the internet. Once theinternet was a great place for humans to interact andnetwork with like minded people in the community of their choice.Man I remember the times. That is of course before the “LOCKBOTS”came. The Lockbotswere made by a company called(GoogooliYahooBingiAolia a.k.a Gooyahbing for short. That’s pronounced (goo-yahhbeeeng)OR (s.-d.s’t.k goo-yahh-beeeng). Gooyahbing was a many headed monster madeup of the largest NETWORLD CONTROLLING PROPERTIES. Gooyahbing did not take anySH&%T either. What the Gooyahbing lockbots did was come and put locks on everything, locking the Humans up and locking all people up.They did it because they did not trust human beings to identify themselves as full Humanbeings and not computers|machines or programs.Apparently programs hate other programs in the computer world and human beings wereunsuspecting of the way programs would punisheach other to see each others identity.Man or Machine, Which are you? The lockbots hated computers|machines and programslike themselves, but even more they hated Humansand were cruel to them. They would sadistically test humans all day with there little lockpuzzles in which they claimed would identify themfrom computers|machines|programs.Every movement, every action was governed by these little lock puzzles and enigmas. They tested Human vision to the max and somehuman beings with weaker vision would just give up because they could not solve theextremely difficult lock puzzles. The Lockbots Spoke a language of completely automated public turing test to tellcomputers and humans apart and an Acronym wasdeveloped and shortened called Captcha. You could not understand this CaptchaGooyahbing language and talk very easy by just seeing it orhearing it.These lockbots were cruel, and punished humans daily by making them work hard tosignup and venture and interact with anything or personoutside the little circle and box that Gooyahbing placed you in.They punished you with their little lock puzzles easy in a split second. These Lock puzzleshurt the brains and eyes of humans and soonhumans would begin to turn their heads sideways and squint, and peer into the screens inorder to see and solve them. This practice beganto cause eye problems in humans there in NETWORLD.Every once and a while a human would feel courageous and try to figure out a LOCKPUZZLE captcha just so he could free himself/herself andtry something new. Gooyahbing only wanted you to try new things on their sites in theirlittle boxes however. They put email, and online blogs, and journals, and games which all seemed to look thesame to the people soon enough. That’s when theybegan to buy up different net properties in hopes to control movement of the masses. They felt like if they bought more properties and that if you were unsuspecting that theyowned them, that you would participate on AND stay onthe sites right where they wanted you. Gooyahbing WANTED to control everything. Soonthe people found out that Gooyahbing bought the site they were on and stopped going. Thepeople hated Gooyahbing but had nothing else in NETWORLD.When Gooyahbing found out that a particular property was getting a large amount oftraffic, then they would put an offer on the table to buyit. They often won and soon had the internet monopolized. They punished you with lockpuzzles if you tried to grow a brain and escape thebox of sites they had bought, controlled and created.THEY PUNISHED SEVERELY!They locked Bob in his house and he couldn’t get out. They locked Jeff in his city and hecouldn’t travel to new interesting lands and see theSIGHTS. They locked Miss Susie in her Car and she couldn’t get out, so she had to livethere forever in a car.She eventually starved to death from lack of food. They locked the children up, and theycould not go out and play creating a race ofGooyahbing minded children created to serve only Gooyahbing. These children eventually only knew what Gooyahbing taught on there sites and chantedGooyahbing, Gooyahbing, Gooyahbing!!! They lockedAbe and Joan up in there own separate cities and pods away from each other preventingthem from ever meeting and dating.Stopping the interaction that could have grown into a romantic lasting harmoniousmarriage from ever occurring. The Lockbots convinced thesite and land owners in NETWORLD to use these difficult lock puzzles for all new signups. In turn, no one could join the site because the lockpuzzles were just too difficult.Everyone just kept getting an error message. They locked Ernest, Peter,Judy,Sally,Mary,Carla, and Pattie in a box as well. They lockedthem all up with these little riddle lock puzzles. and they could not go to school and finishtheir online certifications and degrees. These LOCKBOTS locked people up from interacting everyday with their captcha talk. They locked business men up, and the businessmencould not do business with their customers. These Lockbots placed puzzle locks all overNETWORLD and all over the internet. These lock puzzles were keeping the people enslaved, and in chains from movement, untilat last all hope was lost by humans ofNETWORLD. For these extremely difficult automated lock puzzles could only be open by aspecial automated PUZZLE lockpicking expert. One who could break these locks was said to be a automated Captcha GENIUS andprogram. Ohh Man Ohh man! The people of NETWORLDneeded a hero, to come and save them because no one could move.People online in NETWORLD literally set around not being able to move and Frozen. Havingto take part in minimal sites that Gooyahbingapproved of and wanted them to be apart of only. Gooyahbing were the biggestmanufacturers of captchas lock puzzles and Lockbots. In Fact Gooyahbing Was One big LOCKBOT.The people needed a Hero. The People prayed, and prayed, because the people, despite whatGooyahbing thought, did not like Gooyahbing. Gooyahbing ran several commercials andpropaganda to try and show a human side to theirproductions. But the people knew soon enough that Gooyahbing was behind the lock-ups and puzzlecreations. Gooyahbing would give the people freeemail accounts (as they were called) which were electronic communication boxes tocommunicate only inside there free little areas ofGooyahbing’s network. Now because the humans could not interact with each other in ways that they used to,they were starving and tried to make moneyoccasionally to feed their families. Gooyahbing came up with something called Permissionmarketing and it’s direct violation was calledSPAM. THEY LATER COINED THE PHRASE ?gblackhat?h and Said White is Good, Black is Bad.?gYou had better be Whitehat or be punished with more Captcha!?h Gooyahbing warned. The people soon feared them including me and my crew and the masses of forum users, webmasters, and site owners worldwide. Gooyahbing said ?gWhite?h was angel pure andgood and ?gblack?h was like undercover black operations to send SPAM and unwanted salesoffers.SPAM was a crime punishable by jail, imprisonment and endless exposure to more lockpuzzles that you had to solve in order to keep your life.Gooyahbing’s idea of permission marketing made sense but there was a catch.Gooyahbing mailboxes spam settings were set extremely high and if you used the wordsale in your email, then your mail would instantlyprobably go to the other human’s spam box and would not be seen making you look like aspammer for sending such a mail. You bad person,YOU!This caused a lot of great sales offers to not be seen and men and women NETWORLDWIDE and there families starved to death because they could not sell anything easilly, andinturn make money. The only solution was to send emails to as many willing people aspossible to get the odds to work in your favor but the amount of puzzle locks inGooyahbing’snetwork were enormous. Gooyahbing owned almost all sites.Gooyahbing Lockbots hated SPAM but would hypocritically spam you to death if you gotone of the free Gooyahbing email boxes or mail boxes. They wouldspam you to upgrade to a premium email account. Advertisements were everywhere inGooyahbing’s network, and especially inside youremail and mail. They instituted a program called Gooyahbing AdseniaAdbritiAptiChiti a.k.a ADS. They hadhundreds of these programs to track you with pub numbers (a.k.a. publisher numbers) sothat they could keep a close eye on your site activities if you chose to advertise with themor escape their network of sites. They really didn’t pay that much money with these ADS programs most of the time andyou had to have them on multiple sites or one highly visited site to begin to make asubstantial income. Some site owners made a lot of money but didn’t really do anything tohelp the masses of humans left behind. These ad programs soonbecame just sonar trackers for Gooyahbing thousands of other tracking devices. Here’s how it worked, if you signed up to too many sites then Gooyahbing would try anddiscount you as a manipulator in manycases. Gooyahbing had tracking pods called search engines and these search engines spitout smallertracking automated agents called automated spiderbots. This is how Gooyahbing would determine if you were worthy of displaying your sites offersand messages in the Gooyahbing network. Thisbrought on a whole new skill needed called SEO (SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION) just toget the big Gooyahbing to include you a.k.a ?gindexyou?h in it’s huge database. SEO was a skill because Gooyahbing spoke LOCKBOTCAPTCHA LANGUAGE FROM THE TRIBE OF ONE-WAY-LINKTORIA mixed withWHO-ELSELIKES-YOUR-site-Taria.Then they changed their ONE-WAY-LINKTORIA dialect to make it harder and so regularhumans could not figure out Gooyahbing logic. Lockpuzzles were all over this Gooyahbing network and you could only search the Gooyahbingnetwork of sites that they recommended or get hit with an unlimited nonstop shotof captcha lock puzzles that you and your human eyes alone could not solve. The people needed a Lock Puzzle Captcha Genius Hero to fight off these cruel Gooyahbingprograms and machines. To think that humans created lockbots, would just baffle any civilization if they looked back on us 100 years from now, but humansdid create Lockbots and Gooyahbing. Collegestudents and the brightest of minds. They were Unsuspecting culprits: The term CAPTCHA or lock puzzle(means completelyautomated public turing test to tell computers and humans apart) and itwas coined in 2000 by LUIS VON AHN, MANUEL BLUM,NICHOLAS HOPPER AND JOHNLANGFORD OF CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY.The test used an earlier 1950 computer scientist named Alan Turing’s findings and notuntil now can we see that Alan Turing Science Studies was Used For Bad Intentions.Like I said CAPTCHA or lock puzzle is actually an acronym for “completely automatedpublic turing test to tell computers and humans apart”.It is a computer-generated test which aims to separate a bot (automated|machine|andprogram) from a live, breathing human being online. The “turing” refers to Alan Turing, a computer scientist who, in the 1950s, undertookresearch to distinguish a man from a machine.Captcha or lock puzzle typically involves a computer which ‘serves up’ a lock puzzle (thisusually involves number and/or letter combinations) that a userhas to input into a designated box in order to proceed with whatever process the captchaor lock puzzle is guarding. What you have to understand, is that Captcha or a lock puzzle is not some human guy in anartist community, or some old human GRAFITTI artist from thepast, in the back of the site admin drawing. It’s not a human just sitting in a room drawingdistorted letter and number combinations on an Etch-a-Sketch or artist pad. He’s not in the site admin drawing a series of distorted pictures, numbers and lettersplaying a game of clue with you to see who can solvethem. Saying “here, can you figure this out?” NO NO NO !!! That’s not it! Captcha or lockpuzzle is an automated program. It’s said that Captcha is senthere to stop automatic sign ups.HaHHHHHH! That’s what they want you to believe to make you hate bots, to make youquestion rather or not you hate bots or automation.AUTOMATION! Yes AUTOMATION is what we are talking About Here Not Bots. Automation. To make you hate automation! HATE AUTOMATION! HATEAUTOMATION! IS THE CHANT. No to the the contrary my friend. They want you to hate automation when they make an automated Captcha or lock puzzlemaker. An automated lock puzzle maker. That’s it’s job, it makeslock puzzles. An automated lock maker that makes locks to guard places, sites, and things. That’s its job. It makes locks. It is an automaticbot, that was sent here to lock up NETWORLD.Sent here to control your sign ups and the sign ups you get. Sent here to stop you frominteracting so much. It’s not human, it is anautomated mechanism, an autonomous organism that makes locks. How Ironic is that,Machines|programs|bots giving lock puzzles to tell if ahuman is a machine|program|or a bot or not.bot or not?The Many headed monster Gooyahbing had humans miserable in NETWORLD never beingable to rest and always expecting the next lock puzzle around every corner. You could notignore and you had to solve them to move on to the next step.People were spinning 30 minutes at a site that they really wanted to sign up to and with acommunity that they really wanted to interactwith to no avail. Because the Captcha lockbot mechanism would say they were putting inthe wrong code to solve the lock puzzle. The site would kick them out and tell them they made too many accounts or they must bea machine. The human didn’t even make oneaccount let alone, many. Then the lock puzzles switched to asking what’s 1+5= and whichone of these things is blue, green, red or which oneof these things is different?Human’s would begin to ask, Is this an IQ test or a machine test? It takes a machine tosolve these things. These lock Puzzles. It runs off of a program that tells it how to distort the alphabet and number combinations, you know. That is when the “Intelligent Guy Camea.k.a. IG a.k.a. PD a.k.a. IT the man”.IG thought, wait a minute, If only someone could get that program that spits these lockpuzzles out and collect this data and store it and sort ofreverse engineer it, then CAPTCHA would be automatically solved with lightening speed.Well something like that. So IG said he would develop his own super A. I. hero bot to comeand free the NETWORLD people fromGooyahbing’s sick logic and pranks with lock puzzles. Gooyahbing heard this and found outIG had completed his task.So next Gooyahbing sent word to there network-wide engineers and unsuspecting siteowners to make humans be required toconfirm emails by hand to slow things up a bit. Then they publicized it using the good old”PROTECT YOUR SITES FROM AUTOMATIC SPAMCHANT that Gooyahbing is famous for.You have to understand that Gooyahbing wants to be the only AUTOMATIC SPAMMACHINE and them and them alone. So now the obstaclewas email confirming which was only done by logging in to the free Gooyahbing emailaccount and clicking on a web address that sent the emailand verify your emails.SO BOT OR NOT? Lie teller of your email address or not a lie teller? So much, are youtelling the truth questions that no one stopped to ask? Hey Why would a human lie aboutwho he was or why would all humans lie about who they were? I mean if I want somethingfrom you why would I give a fake way for you to contact me to give that something I want,to me? IG asked this question and Gooyahbing didn’t appreciate it.The task of confirming emails was taking signup individuals all day to do sometimes. IGheard this and got together with his programmers and special megapowerful A.I. And led the what came to be the outrage of the century, when he unveiledauto email confirming that shut off the SPAM settings in the mail box automatically sothat all the email was received first before it then auto confirmed all the mail by clickingon the email addresses automatically.Gooyahbing went back to the lab and added a step to try and make signups more difficultso that they could track humans but the people always found away to beat their cruelty. How Ironic, a Machine, computer and program giving lockpuzzles to tell if a human being is a machine, computer or program. The people prayed for a hero. Then One Day on the Horizon, Came a Hero! He solved Captcha’s before the GOOYAHBINGLOCKBOTS even thought of them. He confirmedemails before the new sites even got through sending them. Always a step ahead on theNETWORLD CHESSBOARD “so to speak”.This hero is fully automated. Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than alocomotive, able to leap tall LOCKBOT LOCK PUZZLEBuildings in a single bound. I had some people ask me what was my secret.I first inquired what they were doing and found out that some of them had an attitude of seeing themedia as something to be suspicious of, to keep at bay and give as little as possible. In turn, the mediahad little regard for them as well. There are many people who treat the media this way as well when it comes to their business, and thenhope that the media will give them great coverage and a good story as well. This is a receipt fordisaster.First, true media does not have the time or energy to “GET” everyone. Often the people end up gettingthemselves in their worry or nervousness. They may say something dumb or negative or attack thereporter who is just doing his or her job. In most cases, the media does not have an ulterior motive andis just collecting information. If you do something foolish, remember though that it is not the media’sjob to help you out of a crisis. When you treat people with respect, they are much more likely to treat you the same way. Yes, therecould be exception, but in most circumstances, I have found that it was never about me and more aboutwhat was happening to them at the time. For example, I had three cases where the people weren’t greatto me, and in each case, they came back to apologize with gift or peace offering in hand. They were each dealing with personal issues and / or were having a bad day. With forgiveness, youcreate a friend, someone who is more willing to help you out in the future.Keep in mind that we need a symbiotic relationship with the media. There will be times when you wantto announce an upcoming event, a breakthrough or change in your organization etc. How you havetreated them in the past will affect what kind of coverage you will get and whether it is good or not.The media can supply you with some very valuable free coverage and coverage that is 3rd hand. Thiscoverage gives credibility to what you are doing or saying. And should something happen that could be negative, the media may write the story whether youcooperate or not. For the most part, it is better to have your comments included rather than them onlyhaving half the facts or speculation to go on.If it is a special event that will last for a while, coffee, treats and smiles go a long way with havingthem stay and giving good coverage. The cost of a coffee and a treat is small potatoes compared withthe coverage that you can receive.Oh, and my secret, just that. I treated them like human beings. I offered to get them coffee. And whenthe game went late, on the break I took them up to the athlete and coaches dinner area and gave themsandwiches and drinks. They were able to get great interviews and we received great coverage. This can be a metaphor for many areas in our lives. Ask yourself, “How am I treating the people in mylife that can help me the most?”Reality Check time:When it comes to Site Promotion (which SEO is used for) Okay, so you want to be be technical? Trance In America: 2000

TranceMore than 10 years after the inception of rave culture, the mainstream media has rediscovered it, as it tends to do every few years. There are three news films about the scene, “Groove,” “Human Traffic” and the documentary love letter “Better Living Through Circuitry.” A vacant-eyed raver, half her face overlaid with rainbow colors, stares from the cover of Time’s June 5 issue. And in the past few months there has been an earnest discussion about dance culture on NPR and a hysterical report about ecstasy on “60 Minutes II.” The cover of last month’s Spin promised to explain “How the DJ Scene Got Massive”; its subhead coyly addressed the drug issue like this: “Ecstasy: The New Beer?”

All this means that the time is ripe for the music biz to take another crack at turning dance music into the next big thing in America — a project started again in earnest about three years ago when the music found a new name, “electronica,” and groups like Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers landed videos on MTV. In England, of course, electronic music long ago achieved market domination, and the latest wave of British invasion markets two double-disc sets from the two most famous dance brands in England. London Records offers “Essential Selection Volume One,” part of a series inspired by Pete Tong’s kingmaking Radio 1 show. And Ultra brings the first American release from the record label of British superclub Ministry of Sound, a two-CD mix by DJs Jimmy Van M and Taylor called “Trance Nation America.”Trance, an anthemic, melodic, slightly New Age-y strain of electronica, is the currently the world’s most popular dance music, but relatively few American trance artists are well known domestically. It’s unsurprising, if ironic, that a British franchise is trying to introduce the burgeoning American trance scene to America — after all, ever since the early days of acid house, British kids have been making heroes of DJs from the States who remained obscure at home. Thus “Trance Nation America” makes sense. What makes no sense is the first American installment of “Essential Selection Vol. One.”

“Essential Selection” comprises two discs, one mixed by Fatboy Slim and one mixed by Paul Oakenfold, two DJs with aesthetics so different that it’s hard to imagine them having any fans in common. Imagine if a label packaged a CD by Madonna with one by Limp Bizkit — the only conceivable audience for such an enterprise would be curious foreigners entirely new to American pop. Similarly, the market for “Essential Selection” seems to be those who’ve caught glimpses of those rave parties on TV and want to know what all the fuss is about.

Perhaps someone could justify marketing these discs together by calling them the opposite poles of rave culture. Fatboy Slim is undoubtedly the yang. His disc is a big-beat frat party: bombastic, muscular, fun and dumb. It’s packed with songs by names that you’ve probably heard before, even if you’ve never waved a glow stick — house DJ Armand Van Helden, the Chemical Brothers, Art of Noise, Underworld and Mr. Slim himself. The opening track, Walter Wanderley’s lounge kitsch “Summer Samba,” sets the insouciant tone, though the disc quickly goes harder with Van Helden’s dirty, driving house track “Necessary Evil.” Many of the cuts on this disc hew close to the formula that has made Fatboy Slim a star — a combination of squishy hip-hop bass and loose-limbed, funk-tinged rhythms looped beneath goofy vocal samples repeated ad infinitum.

Superstar trance DJ Oakenfold, meanwhile, sets off on a smooth, spacey journey through faraway solar systems, enchanted forests and psychedelic daisy fields. Inspired by new-wave acts like New Order far more than by hip-hop, his music is glossy and epic, all Elysian strings, crisp galactic pulses and melodramatic crescendos. Unlike with the companion disc, none of the artists here will be familiar to non-initiates, though many should be. Jaya’s sinuous, echo-laden “Precession” opens the mix and signals Oakenfold’s commitment to dance music with passion and pathos, an aesthetic that reaches its apotheosis in the over-the-top celestial loveliness of Skip Raider’s “Another Day.”

Though “Essential Selection” was devised by Pete Tong, a credible and respected DJ and musician, the weird juxtaposition of Fatboy and Oakenfold makes it seem like the work of a clueless marketing geek. Conversely, the marketer who devised “Trance Nation America” was very slick indeed. Like “Essential Selection,” “Trance Nation America” contains two discs mixed by two different DJs — one by Los Angeles’ Taylor, the other by New York’s Jimmy Van M. But the sound is entirely consistent: Ministry of Sound has obviously clearly defined its demographic and assiduously courts it on its site, in its magazine and through its merchandising.

Unfortunately, the lifestyle Ministry of Sound is peddling is all about surface and affectless cool. The two discs are supposed to be a tour through American trance, a subgenre that, at is best, its ripe with ear-candy melodies and the grandiose pop emotions too often missing from dance music. But unlike Oakenfold, Taylor and Jimmy Van M studiously avoid symphonic grandeur and sentimentality.

While some consider Oakenfold’s baroque flourishes cheesy, they recall the concentrated bliss that marked the early rave scene. In the States, at least, rave’s celebration of crystalline electronic beauty and unfettered joy seemed, at least in part, a reaction of against the disconsolate sludge-rock of grunge. Yet at this point the warm, wild exuberance often gives way to a very stylized pose, which is what one hears on “Trance Nation America,” with its long stretches of angular, passionless percussion, lukewarm builds and disdain for melody.

Sure, these tracks might work differently if you were sweating on a dance floor and buzzing with chemicals, but heard on their own, they certainly don’t suggest the “expanded consciousness through repetitive beats” ecstasy that was once rave’s raison d’?e. As a famous purveyor of some of the world’s most accessible electronic music, Oakenfold’s street cred may be nil, but of these four discs, his mix alone offers the thrilling starburst beauty and intensity that once made raves a refuge for those disenchanted with the jaded, blas?ainstream. Oakenfold’s music leaves one dazed with pleasure. Otherwise, the only trance this music invokes is the pall of zombification. To learn and discover more about trance music, please visit Trance Nation.

Trance Nation is one of the most successful mix CD series and weekly radio shows on the planet. Since 1994 more than 1.000.000 million Trance Nation CDs have been sold worldwide! Trance Nation has grown out of the scene and Trance Nation is still serving the worldwide electronic music scene.

Sound Production – ReFX Vanguard Tips

Sound design is a very competitive, tricky and time consuming process, new trends appear, and die very quickly. Good wholesome sound design requires innovation, a great amount of patience and sometimes a good nights sleep! If you stick to the simple yet effective fundamental theoretical approaches and techniques listed here, then in no time you’ll be the elite Vanguard sound designer you always dreamed to be. Yep, you too can achieve the sound of that French guy with the long hair…
Think of artists such as Spor, Noisia or Dirtyphonics. These people use conventional waveform selection, usually saw and square, but go crazy on everything else. Curiosity gets you places. So let’s throw the rulebook out of the window.
Try literally randomising your settings to start with: slam together different oscillator wave forms, envelopes & fllter settings. For example go crazy on waveform selection sometimes, mix and match. What you thought was a no go, is usually a ‘$%@k me that’s a crazy!’ sound. Your next step will be to refine your raw sound into something more usable and more importantly controllable.
Messing around with the LFO is great it adds depth to your sound, try to add LFO into your sounds and keep the speed low to give a fattening washy effect. Nearly every sound in ‘Oxygene’ by Jean Michelle Jarre (one of my synth programming heros) uses LFO.
Don’t use too much release in a dance lead, sometimes just a little will do, try using hardly any attack, a mid amount of sustain, and a mid amount of decay.
The detune control is a killer and can be the key to any anthem based dance sound. Try taking a sound with no detune and turning the detune knob to around 54% and compare the results.
You often don’t need 16 or 32 voices, sometimes just 5 can be enough, you’ll find turning the voices down can give your mix a more minimalistic sound. This Approach can also relieve essential CPU resources too if your running low!
The Vanguard’s filter can be extremely versatile: for plucky sounds try a low 24 decibal. For bass try low 12 db. For acid sounds try band+shp, notch and format. Being careful in this department can really help determine how your sound sits in the mix, so take your time and experiment.
The Vanguard’s trancegate effect can give some really cool effects – for more subtle fx don’t have it on max, keep the contour control knob low and the gate to around 60%. You can also get some crazy results by playing with the stereo and speed controls of the trancegate.
I’m not a big fan of the Delay unit on the Vanguard. It works better for me on background noises, so if your sound’s the centre piece I’d set the delay to ‘Widen’ with a short delay time to give your sound more stereo width.
The reverb unit on the Vanguard is great for electro. To get the ‘Benassi’ type reverb try this: adjust the mix to around 35%, pre-delay to around 40%, room size to around 15%, damp all the way up & width to 50%. This gives your sound that ‘sidechained’ feel. Glide can also be great on this kind of sound when you have overlapping notes in your sequencer.
So there we have it – a few points to consider when making your own Vanguard sounds – good luck!

The Future of Music: Music Games

Music labels continue to search for new ways to make money in the face of declining cd sales. Digital track sales, such as those from Apple’s iTunes Music Store, were up 27 percent from 2007, breaking the $1 billion mark for the first time in 2008. But, according to Nielsen Soundscan, only 428 million albums (including LPs, CDs, and online albums) were sold – down 14 percent from 2007. As recently as 2005, 619 million albums were sold.  Meanwhile, there are more choices than ever to hear free music online, including MySpace Music, Imeem, Last.fm, and Pandora. It seems clear that music on demand is heading towards the day of free streaming whenever and where-ever people want to listen, and labels and artists will need to find ways to create music experiences for their fans that they are willing to spend money on.

What people have always been willing to pay for is a unique experience where they can engage with an artist’s music in ways that cannot be copied for free. For example, fans love to see live music because they cannot replicate that experience at home. Ringtones have been popular for over a decade. People are still willing to pay to join fan clubs because of perks like a closer relationship to the artist.

One of the most promising areas for music revenue growth is combining music with games. There have been over 30 million downloads of songs in Rock Band because fans to want to rock out to their favorite songs in game play. Guitar Hero has had over 40 million downloads and is now a $2B franchise. What is remarkable is that players have shown a willingness to pay for individual songs for use in music games despite them often costing double the price of a normal digital download. In fact, Aerosmith claims to have made more money from licensing its music to Guitar Hero than from any of the group’s previous recorded albums. Even digital holdouts, The Beatles, will be releasing a Rock Band version of their own. More music games will be coming soon, including Band Hero (for family gaming) and DJ Hero which offers turntable and record scratching games in a battle for victory in a virtual nightclub.

Other popular music games include Dance Dance Revolution, Jam Legend, and Tap Tap Revolution which is one of the best selling iPhone applications. SingStar is a competitive karaoke video game series which requires players to sing along with music in order to score points. Loudcrowd offers a constant stream of music set to a connected series of music-themed games. Through game play and interaction with others, users can earn or purchase a variety of virtual goods including apparel for their character and music tracks that can be collected for play and competition within the site. Best selling artists Fall Out Boy created an artist themed game on FriendsorEnemies.com. Even lo-fi games like lottery tickets are jumping on the music bandwagon. For Aerosmith’s summer tour, fans can win backstage passes, front-row seats, and maybe an extra few million dollars playing Aerosmith branded lottery games.

With the rise of popular casual games on sites like Facebook, Addicting Games, and Miniclip, along with the universal appeal of music, it’s a natural fit for the two to come together. Music games give labels a new way to earn revenue that users have shown a willingness to pay for. It seems clear that more will follow.

Josh Grossman is the Director of Product Marketing for Loudcrowd – a destination for users to experience and engage with music through music games.

Heavy Metal DJs

Don’t worry this isn’t a rant about DJ Ashba, but a close friend of his will be involved. I have to know why Heavy Metal guys are turning to electronic music. We have a prime example in Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee. When Tommy is not pounding on the skins during Cruefest he is scratching records at local nightclubs. Over the years I have come to terms with Tommy, but I read a story today that made me wonder if the world is going to end tomorrow. Jonathan Davis is the official DJ at Infected Mushroom’s album release party. Don’t worry about Infected Mushroom, they are just some electronic band that doesn’t really know how to make music with instruments. The real story here is Jonathan Davis, the Alternative/Heavy Metal hero of an entire generation of 90’s teens and young adults. What happened Jonathan, did you get an electric shock that has messed with the chemistry in your brain? I know I will catch flack because KORN has always had variations of electronic music in their catalogue, but have never resulted to flat out Disc Jockeying. KORN is an institution in harder edge music that had an impact through lyrics and behavior that will live for generations. Seeing those dreadlocks behind a spin table makes me want to be a contestant on “Rock of Love.” We could blame Tommy Lee for this or we could blame the artistic side of musicians that feel they need to expand and explore their art, but electronic music? Its not even real music is it? Jonathan Davis has been really sick with an auto-immune disease and maybe he’s at a point where he doesn’t care what anyone thinks, but this might be taking it to far. Metallica takes heat for adding an alternative edge to their sound; people say they sold out Thrash Metal and turned their back on it. If Metallica committed a deadly sin what in the hell is Jonathan Davis doing by scratching some 50 Cent on a turntable?
